The legal industry has bounced back, gaining 2,400 jobs between March and April, according to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In April, 1,237,100 people worked in the legal sector, which includes lawyer, paralegal and other legal professional positions, Law360 reports. In March, the legal sector lost jobs for the first time in more than a year. At that time, 1,234,700 people worked in the sector.
“Things are feeling very busy in the law firm space,” Michelle Fivel, a founding partner of recruiting company Hatch Henderson Fivel, told Law360. “Firms are seeking talent in practice areas across the board, especially in finance, real estate and M&A.”
The government data also shows that the number of legal jobs increased by 20,800 since this time last year, Law360 reports.
Fivel told Law360 that despite recent layoffs at McDermott Will & Schulte and Allen Overy Shearman Sterling, she doesn’t see any signs that demand for talent will slow down.
“At this point, it feels like layoffs are limited to firms that are rightsizing after organizational changes rather than a symptom of a broader industry trend,” she said.
