Based on the wishes of his siblings, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office will not seek the death penalty for Nick Reiner, who is charged with murdering his parents, Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner and photographer and film producer Michele Singer Reiner.

In December, the celebrity couple were found fatally stabbed in their home. It’s been reported that their daughter Romy Reiner, 28, found the bodies. Their son Nick Reiner, 33, was charged with first-degree murder; he has pleaded not guilty.

“This decision reflects our careful judgment about the most appropriate path to take in this case and does not diminish the severity of these crimes,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement, Reuters reports.

If found guilty, Nick Reiner could be sentenced to life in prison, according to the article.

The couple’s other son, Jake Reiner, 35, was interviewed by KABC in August. He would not discuss how he feels about his brother, but the interview did mention that Nick Reiner’s addiction and mental health problems were well known before the killings.

“My parents had unconditional love for all three of us. I can tell you they never stopped wanting to help him,” Jake Reiner told KABC.
