Three professors have announced plans to depart from a Nevada law school following a proposed 36 percent cut in the state’s higher education budget to help deal with a revenue shortfall. And other faculty members reportedly may soon follow their lead.

Rising stars Raquel Aldana and Tuan Samahon say the budget cut was an important factor in their decision to depart the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, writes the Las Vegas Sun.

A third professor, Michael Higdon, says he is moving to the University of Tennessee to be closer to family, but also expresses concern that the budget cut, if imposed, will hurt the law school, the newspaper reports. Meanwhile, other faculty are interviewing for jobs elsewhere, too.

Dean John Valery White says some faculty turnover is inevitable. However, the law school remains committed to keeping top professorial talent on its roster.

“The economy is in a deep crisis. There are layoffs everywhere,” says Dan Burns, a spokesman for the state’s Republican governor, Jim Gibbons, concerning the planned higher education budget cut. “Thousands of people don’t know whether they’re going to get their next paycheck. The money is just not there.”
