A contestant on Survivor Greece who lost his leg in a boating accident during production has sued the reality TV show’s producers claiming that they failed to protect participants while filming a spearfishing segment in the Dominican Republic.
The 61-page lawsuit, filed Wednesday by contestant Stavros Floros in Miami-Dade County, Florida, alleges that the show’s producers ignored dangers in the waters near Bayahibe in the Dominican Republic, where the contestants spearfished for food, and provided inadequate safety gear, Courthouse News Service reports.
Floros’ leg was severed above the knee by a tour boat’s propellers May 11 while he was in the water spearfishing for food. The boat’s occupants pulled Floros onto the vessel and applied a tourniquet before transporting him to a local medical facility.
Floros claims that producers attempted to cover up the accident to avoid liability. Floros identifies Turkish media company Acun Medya, as well as its subsidiaries, and Greek television station Skai Television as defendants in the suit, according to Courthouse News Service. He seeks more than $100 million in damages for claims of negligence, civil conspiracy and violations of maritime law.
Floros is bringing the suit in Florida because Acun Medya owner Acun Ilicali has long-standing ties to Miami.
