What do Christmas, Hanukkah, the Supremes and justice have in common? They are all on display in a holiday card from the mid-1990s and feature portraits of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the late Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
The card is headed to auction through the Nate D. Sanders Auctions.
On the front of the 5-by-7-inch card, “Happy Hanukkah” is written above Ginsburg’s likeness, and “Merry Christmas” is written above O’Connor’s likeness—in accordance with their respective faiths. Inside the card, the message says: “From The Supremes,” a reference to the famous female musical trio. At the time that the card was sent, Ginsburg and O’Connor were the only two women on the high court, with O’Connor joining the bench in 1981 and Ginsburg joining 12 years later.
The card also features a handwritten note from Ginsburg to friends Davideen and Stuart Werner thanking them for holiday gifts for her grandchildren and adding, “May 1996 be a vintage year for you.” Ginsburg signed the card from her husband, Martin Ginsburg, and herself.
The card is described as being in near-fine condition but for a faint spot on the front. The minimum bid is $2,000, and bidding is set to close Thursday, as noted in a story by Above the Law.
