In his last days in office, Vice President Dick Cheney lobbied hard for a pardon of his former chief of staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, convicted of lying and obstructing an investigation into the leaked identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame.

The New York Times describes Cheney’s pleas as “a furious last-ditch effort.” Cheney was “furious when President George W. Bush wouldn’t budge” and is bitter over the refusal, according the New York Daily News, which broke the story.

Bush commuted Libby’s sentence in July 2007, and Libby dropped his appeal because he could no longer afford it.
