Jones Day lawyer returns to firm after stint at DOJ

A lawyer who worked in the U.S. Department of Justice and fought some of the second Trump administration’s high-profile legal battles, including defending the White House over its ballroom construction, is rejoining Jones Day, the law firm announced Monday.
Yaakov M. Roth, who worked in the DOJ’s Civil Division since February 2025, will rejoin Jones Day as a partner in its issues & appeals practice. He will be based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office.
At the DOJ, Roth was a senior deputy in the Civil Division, which he also led in an acting capacity for several months, according to a stories by Law360 and Reuters.
“It was an intense and exhilarating experience as we faced an unprecedented surge of civil litigation targeting the new administration’s agenda,” Roth wrote in a June post on LinkedIn about leaving government service.
