With great power comes great responsibilities. And with great debts come great litigation.
Actor Tobey Maguire—best known for his roles in Sam Raimi’s Spiderman films and Oscar-winning movies such as The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys—testified Wednesday in the ongoing federal tax evasion trial of lawyer and SCOTUSblog co-founder Tom Goldstein, according to Reuters and the JDJournal.
Goldstein, who is accused of using his law firm, Goldstein & Russell, to cover gambling debts while underreporting income from his winnings, allegedly participated in high-stakes poker games that were frequented by celebrities—one of which was Maguire.
Appearing as a prosecution witness, Maguire testified that he had hired Goldstein to help recover more than $7 million in poker winnings from another player, a Texas-based businessman.
According to Reuters, Maguire testified that he routed $500,000 in legal fees through a third party, rather than give it directly to Goldstein. Prosecutors allege that Goldstein used the money to pay off his own gambling debts, Reuters reports.
Goldstein’s attorney told Reuters that these three-way transactions are common in the poker world. Maguire, who is not accused of wrongdoing, declined to comment.
