A retired appellate judge has been charged with murdering his wife, in the first such case ever brought against a judge in Canada.

Jacques Delisle, 75, faces charges of first-degree murder charge and illegal possession of a weapon, in a case that will be handled with exceptional legal procedures, reports Canwest News Service.

His 71-year-old wife, Marie-Nicole Rainville, died on Nov. 12, 2009, at the couple’s home in Quebec City and an unidentified 911 called said at the time that a woman had just killed herself there. She reportedly may have had a stroke earlier and been left partially paralyzed.

Appointed to the Court of Appeal in 1992, Delisle retired from the bench there last year.
