Lawyer arrested, charged with theft, forgery after facing previous disciplinary action from court

A Georgia attorney was arrested Tuesday on multiple felony charges months after facing previous disciplinary action from the Georgia Supreme Court and voluntarily surrendering her law license.
Lawyer Je’Nita Nakia Lane, 46, was charged with theft by deception, forgery, identity theft fraud and computer theft. Investigators with the Albany Police Department in Georgia outlined allegations from two separate clients involved in auto accidents, both of whom hired Lane’s firm, the J. Lane Law Group, to represent them.
Investigators allege that Lane held onto insurance settlement checks in both cases, according to coverage by WALB. She was charged and booked into the Dougherty County Jail.
Months before Lane’s arrest, the Georgia Supreme Court accepted the voluntary surrender of her law license. Court records show that Lane admitted that in one case, she was holding $199,045.41 in client settlement funds that were earmarked to settle a Medicaid lien. She acknowledged violating the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct regarding handling client funds and trust accounts.
Police encourage anyone who hired Lane and never received money owned to them to come forward, thinking that there may be more victims.
