A United Kingdom law firm ordinarily charges about 600 pounds for a divorce. But Follett Stock Solicitors has hit the headlines by offering them for free this month.

Religious leaders are slamming the offer, which they say encourages a hasty decision to untie the knot. But the law firm counters that it is helping those who want to divorce but can’t afford to, the Daily Mail reports.

The free divorce offer was made on the firm’s website, in a flyer and on Twitter. The free representation doesn’t include court costs or extras such as tracing a spouse or finding lost documents.

‘An awful lot of firms off fixed-fee divorces but we decided to offer a free service for people who want a divorce but can’t afford it,” associate partner Rebecca Gurgul tells the newspaper.

She adds: “We don’t break people’s marriages up. The divorce process is the same if you are a millionaire or on legal aid.”
