As snow began falling Monday in what is forecast as a potential record-breaking blizzard in the Northeast, court officials joined those in charge of schools and other government offices in declaring an anticipatory shutdown.

Amidst airport and school closings and warnings against unnecessary travel, a number of Boston and New York City area courts closed early Monday and are expected to remain closed Tuesday. All New Hampshire and New Jersey courts will be closed Tuesday, as well as most or all state and federal courts in Maine and Massachusetts, according to Courthouse News and New England Cable News.

“Get off the roads, get off the streets, get off the sidewalks. This will most likely be one of the largest blizzards in the history of New York City,” said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio during a press conference about the storm, the New York Daily News reports.
