County prosecutor removed from office amid accusations of sexual misconduct on the job

A Missouri county prosecutor has been removed from office after being accused of sexual misconduct, including inappropriate relationships with a criminal defendant and a defense attorney whom she was trying cases against.
Ray County, Missouri, Prosecutor Camille Johnston was temporarily removed from her elected post last week by a Missouri judge after an investigation by Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway, according to coverage by Fox 2 in St. Louis.
The allegations against Johnston, a Republican who has served as Ray County’s elected prosecutor since 2015, include inappropriate sexual relations that Hanaway said were discovered by courthouse staff, according to Fox 2.
Hanaway filed for a petition for a writ of quo warranto seeking to permanently remove Johnston from office. She was temporarily removed pending a full hearing on the case.
“When an elected official treats public office like their personal playground, betraying the public trust, ignoring legal obligations and putting self-interest first, removal isn’t a suggestion; it’s a necessity,” Hanaway said in a July 16 news release.
Fox 2 could not reach Johnston for comment. A representative at the Ray County Courthouse told Fox 2 that they had no comment.
